The Raspberry Pi Foundation announced the release of the new Raspberry Pi 4 Model B today. If you want to know how it works with the FabScanPi you I suggest you to read the related blog post.

If you have further questions, feel free to ask here.

@mario

Hi Mario,

I have two questions.

I can move the resolution slider only to lowest, middle and high. No other steps.

During the calibration the log shows timeouts ( ... waiting for the next command)

but the calibration ends with success.

The lasers are not activ during the calibration. Normal?

The hardware (PI4, fabscanshielt with UNO, two red line laser 1mW, stepper 400steps. PI Cam V2 with LED Ring) is working fine. Everything can be switched on/off).

I tried several servers.

Any idea? Are You still working on the project?

Thanks for Your help.

Uwe

There is nothing special about it. Just use the current sd-card image release. Pi4 should work out of the box with it. But keep in mind that the pi4 has a higher power consumption than the pi3 and even active cooling is needed.

Is it recommended or is it a must that the step-down must be removed from the motorshield if i want to use a Raspi 4 B.

Or is it true that i can use 2 power supplies. The old one from the shield and one for the Raspi 4B, without to remove the step-down?

First i used the Step-down from this link from this article, but the Pi 4 didn`t start. So i decided to use 2 power supplies and with them i solved the problem.

The step-down voltage regulator mentioned does in-fact work. Adjust the pentameter for just under 5V (very tiny adjustments, mine is set at 4.8V) and make sure to use a power supply capable of at least 12V 3A (I get 5V 5A  at the OUT using this).

I attached 4 x 2-pin headers to the step-down board with short wires that connect to the Fabscan HAT at the same location as the original RPI 3 voltage regulator after attaching a 3-pin header on the HAT.

While I do not suspect an upgrade will be necessary for the step-down regulator, at least with this configuration it can be easily done.

Given the current needed by the Pi 4 and the limiting factor on the step down best practice would be to remove the step down and go with an external power supply. having more than one power supply that is independently powering a board can have issues and not the best practice. This is from working with CNC BOB's, transceivers, and other power sensitive equipment; as both work and hobby (MM0MSU, full UK permit amateur radio).

Back in 2019 it was mentioned that a new hat for the Pi4 was being developed. Is this now available?

Thank you - Alan
